Suction cups

Suction cups

Our (passive) suction cups with the clingfish-effect can attach to smooth surfaces, surfaces of various surface roughness, and structured surfaces. Moreover, these surfaces can be flat or uneven. The tolerated surface irregularities vary somewhat with the size and the design of the suction cup. For example, passive suction cups with a diameter of 6-8 cm tolerate surface irregularities up to approximately 1 mm in height. Firm surfaces are ideal, but a certain amount of material flexibility can be tolerated. Nevertheless, the materials must be non-permeable for liquids (air or water)

Examples for applicable surfaces

Structured Surfaces

Structured Tiles, Structured Glass, Structured Metal

Rough surfaces

Anti-slip and other rough tiles, unpolished non-porous rock e.g. marble and granite, Scratched and rough metal,
Laminate, Wood imitations/Sealed wood, Plaster pool surfaces, All types of rough surfaces covered with a sealing varnish.

Smooth surfaces

Smooth tiles, Polished nonporous rock surfaces, Glass, Acrylic glass, Ceramic, Kitchen counters, melamine coating.

Non-applicable surfaces

All types of surfaces made of porous or permeabel material (independent of the surface structure) such as

  • – Plaster walls
  • – Most unsealed woods
  • – OSB board
  • – Porous rocks such as sandstone

At slightly permeable or porous materials (such as some concrete walls) the suction cups may attach briefly, but over time air will leak through the wall causing the suction cup to detach.
